We are pleased to announce the

2013 Cigar Box Guitar Builders Challenge!

The contest begins immediately. The deadline for submissions is midnight, December 31, 2013.

A winner will be announced the first part of January, 2014.

This year the theme will be:

Steampunk

From Urban Dictionary: Steampunk is a subgenre of speculative fiction, usually set in an anachronistic Victorian or quasi-Victorian alternate history setting. It could be described by the slogan "What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner." It includes fiction with science fiction, fantasy or horror themes.

Contest Rules:

  • One submission per person.
  • Each submission shall be an instrument of the builder's own construction and overall design.
  • The instrument shall prominently and visibly feature a cigar box in the design.
  • Each builder will submit up to five pictures of their creation. No videos please till after the judging is complete.
  • Entries must be submitted no later than midnight December 31, 2013.
  • Builders shall post the pictures of their instruments in the separate "Contest Submission Thread."
  • Builders should include descriptions of their work, including any technical details such as features, materials used, or any other information they feel would assist the judges in reviewing the submission.

Once the submission period ends, all comments in the submission thread from other CBN members will be deleted to make it easier for the judges to review the entries. The judges will review the pictures and select a winner.

The decision of the judges is final.

We will notify everyone of who the judges will be once we get that list finalized. We try to have 3-5 judges on the panel.

Do NOT post your entries or pictures in this thread!

There will be a separate thread for submissions so we can keep all the entries in one place.

You can post your entries HERE!

Good luck and have fun!!

Here is a link to last year's contest in case you have not seen it yet.

Remember Christmas at 7 years old? Couldn't wait! Wondering if you were on the naughty or nice list! Wondering about all those things you should, or should not have done... Relish that feeling again fellow builders!!!
Well, can I resubmit a pic tomorrow of one of the already-submitted builds? I...kinda...modified it. ;-)

Ummm.....

You dirty rat....
Nononono, not as an additional, after-the-fact submission! Just to show how Eric and I kinda think alike, because there was lots of back and forth on his build, with freedom of expression retained... And because it looks kewl. And because I like pushing people's buttons...

Oh, and I got it tuned to A-D-F#, with the addition of two string trees. Just figured out how to play the melody to Wildwood Flower on it in about 5 minutes this morning. It has an interesting unlocatable buzz that I suspect is the cone edge vibrating against the box, or maybe the braid from the rod piezo vibrating against the cone, or maybe it needs string slots in the saddle now. Whatever, I like it, it sounds kinda chorusy. And the rotary engine propeller looks kewl on the headstock round. That's what I meant by...kinda...modified. Will post a vid later today.
It's cool. I was yanking yer chain. Can't wait to hear it!

I haven't had any luck filing string guides in bone bridges. I get buzz every time. Might be the piezo wire or the f#strings being too loose since they are super slinky.
I knew dat...
It is keeling me!

me too . They did get 3 big judges though . i just want to know what they think of my work .

They think your work is fantastic, definitely a contender, sooo many entries, difficult choices here...

You know. They'll be " judicious." >:-E

What you really wanna know is "Did I win? And if not, who did?"

its good to know i am a contender and you are correct , i wanna know who won . Some insane instruments in this . Cant wait till the next one .

I was not able to finish my entry before the deadline...... however when it is finished I would like to share some pics and info about it with everyone here. I am new around these parts, so where and or how would be the best way area or way to post about it? Thank you very much for any and all help.
