We are pleased to announce the

2013 Cigar Box Guitar Builders Challenge!

The contest begins immediately. The deadline for submissions is midnight, December 31, 2013.

A winner will be announced the first part of January, 2014.

This year the theme will be:

Steampunk

From Urban Dictionary: Steampunk is a subgenre of speculative fiction, usually set in an anachronistic Victorian or quasi-Victorian alternate history setting. It could be described by the slogan "What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner." It includes fiction with science fiction, fantasy or horror themes.

Contest Rules:

  • One submission per person.
  • Each submission shall be an instrument of the builder's own construction and overall design.
  • The instrument shall prominently and visibly feature a cigar box in the design.
  • Each builder will submit up to five pictures of their creation. No videos please till after the judging is complete.
  • Entries must be submitted no later than midnight December 31, 2013.
  • Builders shall post the pictures of their instruments in the separate "Contest Submission Thread."
  • Builders should include descriptions of their work, including any technical details such as features, materials used, or any other information they feel would assist the judges in reviewing the submission.

Once the submission period ends, all comments in the submission thread from other CBN members will be deleted to make it easier for the judges to review the entries. The judges will review the pictures and select a winner.

The decision of the judges is final.

We will notify everyone of who the judges will be once we get that list finalized. We try to have 3-5 judges on the panel.

Do NOT post your entries or pictures in this thread!

There will be a separate thread for submissions so we can keep all the entries in one place.

You can post your entries HERE!

Good luck and have fun!!

There are no "finals" per se.

The judges will review all the entries that have been submitted. They are very aware of the rules and will judge the entries accordingly.

Doesn't matter to me whether Kieth, anyone else, or a guy in Honduras builds a "cigar box", the judges can do the judging, it was FUN!

Yep, kept me from going a bit gaga during the insanity of this year's Xmas....

Welcome to Cigar Box Nation, Marc! Having joined just today, you certainly have hit the ground running as far as finding things to complain about goes.

As the guy sponsoring this contest and bankrolling the prizes, here are my views on the topic. We do not automatically disqualify any entry. If a person chooses to gamble and break the rules, they are free to do so. And the judges are also free to ignore the rules as well when judging. Rule breaking is a core theme of this whole CBG movement, and gambling with rule breaking always has a chance, albeit slight, of paying off. I'm actually glad to see it.

If you find this unacceptable, then I don't know what to tell you. Perhaps there are other contests on the internet that have the strictness of rule that you require. Or maybe you could host your own contest. Whatever you choose to do, I would encourage you to not waste your time annotating and posting photos or writing whiny posts.

just jump right in mark, don,t worry about rocks

I just want to thank Ben, Dan, and our three esteemed judges for your time, effort, and the generous prizes. I thought the build would be pretty quick and easy since my entry didn't have a ton of goodies in or on the box but, was I mistaken. Planning where things should go and then second guessing myself and the whole process was not so "cut and dry" I found out. I had a blast building my CBG though, and have really enjoyed seeing everyone else's entries, the creativity and talent displayed is awesome! Another thanks to CB Gitty for getting parts shipped out so quickly. Good luck to everyone and Happy New Year!

is there contest passed away.. ??

The contest submission period ended on 12/31, and the entries are being reviewed by the judges. We expect to have the results any day now.
