H i y'all. I am now on my 13th instrument , lots of great fun and sore fingers doing them. Some I have given away as gifts, keeping most.
I have been using wooden boxes so far (the type with hinges and printed logos ). I am about to start on boxes covered in decorated paper with paper hinges etc.Is there a trick to keeping the boxes clean ?
Good on y'all Clive

Hi Clive

Just work neat and clean, give 'em 2 or 3 of light coats of rattle can acrylic spay lacquer before assembling everything to keep them looking clean. Be very sparing with the lacquer, otherwise it will soak right thru' the paper and cause it to discolour, so just mist it on really lightly. 13 instruments..well done, you've been busy!

Thanks Chickenbone..Im presuming a matt laquer..Im using a gloss laquer (Halfords ) for the rear of the necks.I have been inspired since the visit to the inaugral meeting in Birmingham last year.
i spend many a happy hour "a whitlin'" in my garage.
I get great pleasure forming the necks from pieces of wood purloned from work.
Hoping for a revit to the second meet of CBG

I use the ordinary auto gloss lacquer..but not from Halfords - I buy it from the local DIY or auto shop, as it's about 1/3 price.

I remember someone suggesting cling wrap while working on them.
I am with you on the clear acrylic , works great as long as box is clean too... i still recon the worst part is removing the "No Smoking , cancer stickers from the paper boxes, the ones in Australia cover almost half the bloody box..have to be so so careful not to damage the paper/artwork removing them..
On paper boxes I always leave the health warning stickers on, the ones in the UK have such tenacious adhesive they ruin the paper if you try peeling them off..I have had people specifically ask me for a guitar with a "Smoking Kills" sticker..no accounting for taste. A first I really hated these stickers..but now think it's all part of the deal.

Good idea ,thanks Wade

Well if you are referring to how to keep them clean during the build, I have a great tip I learned here. First off, read the tips under the Secrets of the CBG underground group.

Second, Cover the box in cling wrap (cellophane such as Saran Wrap or the equivalent in the UK) Makes a great see-thru protective shield.

After the build I have used polyurethane or shellac (whichever is easiest) or even clear spray lacquer. But then again, that's only if you don't want to have it 'age' naturally.
