First of all, I'm new to fretting so any guidance or advice will be appreciated.

I copied the fretting scale from a telecaster and applied it to my latest CBG build, strung it up and can't tune it to save my life.

The difference is, I copied the scale down to the 14th fret because that is the neck length I wanted. A tele has 21 frets thus a longer neck. I fail to see the correlation but I'm stumped. What went wrong and how can I fix it???

Measure the distance from the point where the string touches the nut to the 12th fret. Whatever that measurement is, double it and that is the distance you should have from the nut to the bridge.

Telecasters are usually a 25.5 inch scale, so the distance from the nut to the 12th fret should be 12.75 inches.

When you lay out an instrument, you have to make sure that you don't end up with a bridge location that is off the end of the guitar.

If you check my page here, I have a basic neck layout and a fretting video that may help.

Got it Dan.

I assume that what you described is a "rule of thumb" for all scales?

Thanks for your help and I'll check out your video!

Correct. So a 24 inch scale would be 12 inches from the nut to the 12th fret. And so on...

Here's a great guide for fret positions from stewmac. Really helps and figures compensation close too.
