Well , I but the bullet and bought some simple open gear tuners from this site.
I'm looking for some posts about spacing and how to put them on? I haven't received them yet but I'm trying to get a jump start. I usually make on 3 string and plan on making a 3 string but is also like to make a 4-6 string slide guitar....frets are another story and for another time...thanks

Thanks for that...should be nice to get away from eye bolts ...must say they treated me well and cheap. Looking forward to tuning regular though...

I have considered going more primitive. Could you post some pics of how youi didn the eye bolts.

Let me know if you can't see pic well enough

So I have just received my first economy open gear tuners. I plan on 2 tuners on the left and one on the right of the headstock. I have a few questions please.

1. How far apart should each tuner be ? From each other and from the very end of the headstock? When I used eyebolts I measured 1 and 1/2 inches from the very end of headstock then on the same side did all three eyebolts 1 and 1/2 from each other. Any help here appreciated.

2. These are my first geared tuners. Is it any wiser or easier to just do all three tuners on the same side rather than 2 one side and one on other?

Thank you

I put mine as close together as possible and as near the end of the headstock as possble. This in order to keep the overall length of the CBG from getting out of hand.

You will find the tuners are left and right hand. You want them all to turn in the same direction to increase string tension. So you might want to place them accordingly. However there is no "wiser" way of doing it. There are no rules you know.

Thanks,
I see alot of cbgs with 2 one side and 1 on other. I think I'll do as you suggest. All on one side.
So the economy tuners fit a 1/4 drill bit...but the bushing doesn't . A 5/16 bit worked but leaves a wiggly peg somewhat. Is there a tip on how to fit the tuner snug but also get the bushing in? I haven't used the screws yet and used a scrap piece of wood to test...I'm thinking a counter sink paddle drill bit or something? Not sure. Your help appreciated.

Hi John, when using the economy tuners I would drill a 1/4" hole through the headstock. Then from the top I would drill with a 5/16" just deep enough to fit the bushing in (about half way through)

Hi Mark,

You should not have to do that and it probably is not even a good thing.  The tuner post is held/fixed in position at the top of the head stock by the bushing.  The tuner itself is held/fixed in position at the bottom of the head stock by the screws.

When mounting, you always have to circular gear towards the nut. There is a reason.  The circular gear is attached to the post.  As the string pulls at the top, the post wants to go towards the nut at the string side of the headstock and towards the top of the headstock on the bottom or gear side of the headstock, pivetting on the bottom edge of the bushing. What this does is bring the circular gear on the post in snug on the worm gear for the tuner peg giving (a) better tuning action and (b) less wear on the gears.

If you drill out as you describe, I think you will stop this as you will have eliminated the play built into the tuner.

I was trying to figure out how to make the tuners truly economical. All on one side ..bottom or tops. 2 on top 1 on bottom. 2 on bottom one on top. I'm guessing it don't matter much either way..

I didnt mean you had to put them all on the same side to get them to turn in the same direction although you could do it that way. You can also put two of a type on a side and one of the other type on the other side. Play with them and you will see what I mean.

Now all this is not absolutely necessay. it will work no matter how you do it. But tuneing becomes a bit confusing when you have to turn the knobs in different directions to tighten different strings. DAMHIK.

An inch and a half apart for tuner spacing. If you got a standard economy pack, 3 left and 3 right from Gitty, Stagger the tuners on each side of the neck. You will know which tuners go on which side. The cog wheel should be on the side of the tuner closest to the nut.

Standard guitar spacing for tuners is a half inch in from the edge,of the head stock. I put the tuners closest to the nut marginally closer to the edge on three and four strings.

As for how far back from the nut to put them, I use a scarf joint and have about 6" to 7" headstock with the tuners starting about 3" from the nut. This gives enough drop in the strings that I do not need a string tree. If you are using a string tree to keep the strings snug on the nut, make the head stock as long or short as you like.

The tuners I used from Gitty used a 5/16" hole. The hole should be the same size as the bushing. The bushing presses in from the top, then the tuner mounts through the bushing and screws in from the bottom.

Find a reamer and GENTLY ream the hole from the top just anlittle before pressing in your bushing. Then it will fit snuggly and you will not have to pound it in. If you do, it will break. I have had no problems with plastic bushings.

The thickness of the head stock is between 1/2" and 5/8".

DO pre drill the holes for the tuner screws using a 1/16" drill. DO be gentile screwing them in. those screws are delicate and they will snap off. It is a real pain trying to dig them back out or screw around them.
