Let me do my best to explain myself here... I got my tuner set today for my guitar and judging my how they turn, it seems I can either have them all turn in one direction to tighten, or I can have them all take the string on the inside (or outside), but I cant have both. I'm including a picture to show what I mean, the first diagram shows how the strings will have to wrap onto the post if I want the tuners to all turn clockwise to tighten. The second diagram shows that if I want all the strings to wrap the post on the inside I will have some keys that turn CW and some that turn CCW to tighten. Which is the typical way of doing it? I'm leaning towards making all the strings wrap on the inside and just remembering which keys turn which direction

I agree with naz that option 2 is always the best way to use them.
Hogs.
Sometimes depends on the nut/string angle .

If they're open-geared , you can reverse 'em . All four knobs in the pic ^ turn to tighten the same way as normal , the outside (low/high strings) just have the posts turning opposite . A lot of open-geared tuners can be reversed , just unscrew the screw and reverse the worm gear (knob to the other side) ....

Option 2.

Also, most guits I've seen have the 'gear' on the top. I've found that if you have an open gear tuning machine, the tension of the strings will cause the gears to slip, so make sure you have them on right. I would turn the machines so that they are all like the two on the right (farthest from the nut in the pic above). You're diagram should work fine. - WY
