Newbie Question on Amps. I got one of the 2.5 amp kits from Gitty. It is powered by 9v. battery. I have wired it with a DPDT switch. It will power from a 9v. battery when switch is thrown one way and if you throw it the other way it will get it's power from a 9v. 150ma ac adapter which came with an old unused wall phone. I am kind of anal about never throwing out the a/c adapters that come with most equipment. I got boxes of then. I know a new 9 volt battery will put out more than 9 volts. I got some that put out 7.5 volts. Has any body ever tried this. My amp works with the battery. I hooked it to the piezo and it works. I have not used the A/C adapter setting yet. I am asking for advice before trying it. Has anybody ever tried it? I have been woodworking for many years and have still picked up some fine tips and tricks from reading the board, but can't find where this has been addressed. I also have read things on here about getting the 1 degree angle on the neck but I can't seem to be able to get back to it. That is another question. I am going to build an acoustic and an electric 3 string 24 3/4 scale for my first two builds. I have the amp built for a guitar that doesn't exist except in my mind. Any comments graciously accepted.

I am pretty sure the input is 7-12 volts on the Artec board in those kits. I say try it. The lower voltage will manifest itself in lower volumes.

If you don't have a 9v, may I suggest  a Goodwill/Salvation Army type store. They will have a jillion adaptors you can pick through at about two bits apiece. Buy several, they aren't always working right when you get them home.

I had been told by the Guitar Fuel guy that they recommend a regulated power supply to avoid unnecessary hum.

One that is rated at 300-500mah will probably work.

If you have the right type of power input jack, it will automatically switch to the power supply when it is plugged in, and run off the battery when it is not.

Uggh. Forgot about that. Sorry B Hound. Should have mentioned the mA s. Buzz they will.

I appreciate the feedback folks. I am not sure what you mean by regulated power supply, unless you mean a UPS like you plug a computer (American Power Conversions example) The whole idea was portability and able to plug in with local power. If I have to walk around with a UPS under my arm it kind of defeats the purpose. As far as the auto change over on the plug. I was dealing with a local Radio Shack counter person that couldn't grasp the fact that when I plug in my headphones I wanted my speaker to cut-off. He finally just kind of went on his way and let me dig around in the drawer and come up with what I needed. I looked for a power jack like what you are referring. Bottom line is I am not into uncharted waters here. If it works and no buzz I am gold. I had a 12volt TV one time and It took i think like a !000 ma converter. I plugged in another 12 volt adapter to it and it would not work. No harm No Foul, just no picture. I tried what  I got and there is a slight hum and t plugged the adapter in both ways into receptacle. That was with no git on it,as I said in OP I am going to work on the guitar next. We have an America Thrift Store local and if what I got doesn't work I will try there for a bigger one. I can't play so the hum I got will be well covered up.

A regulated power supply is NOT a UPS or a big and bulky thing you have to carry around with you on a hand cart. It is a AC to DC converter with a special circuit in it that provides stable output voltage:

Don't waste your breath on anyone at Radio Shack. If it does not relate to mobile phones, they are totally clueless.

You essentially want a jack that is normally closed, and opens when the power supply is plugged in.

So, a regulated power supply (they should say "regulated" right on the unit), with sufficient amperage (mah rating) to drive the amp, and a jack that will cut the battery off when you plug the power supply in.

I would think that would work just fine. It has 1000mah so it should have plenty of oomph.

Thanks Folks, I now know how to go.

Is this what I need? Reviews on item are mixed, mainly say to watch polarity.

Yea, you don't want to get the positive and negative mixed up.
