I have a friend, a fellow boat builder, who has commissioned me to build a cigar box uke for him. Would prefer a nautical theme. (Sailing boats, canoes, owl & pussycat, mole & ratty, whatever). No hurry. Any leads / offers appreciated. Thanks!

1. Make it paddle shaped. Or boat shaped.
2. Use twisted rope for bindings
3. Attach 2 carabiner for the strap
4. Cut the "compass rose" soundhole
5. Anchor shaped bridge?
6. Neptune's trident shaped headstock
7. Paint it navy blue/white
8. Use red wood for the fretboard, paint 3,5,7,9 and 12 fret white (lighthouse colors)
9. Use pine, sand it hard to give it a "sea-washed" look.
My memory was wrong. I do have a box from Myrtle Beach - Carolina Cubanos, but it doesn't have a nautical image. My bad.
I made the rounds of local cigar stores today. Found nothing and also found no solid cedar tops or bottoms. All plywood. Bummer.
Thanks for looking.
You can also make your own. Find an image on the web that you like. Print it out on a large, full page label from the stationary store. Give it a light coat of urethane or other clear lacquer to set the ink from your printer.
Find a box that has little or no art on the front, and put your custom label over the top.
Give several light coats of varnish/lacquer/urethane and you are good to go.
I would try:
Use a Stanley knife to cut very small slits around the sides of the box simulating splanking. Paint the bottom of the box red running it up a 1/2", or so, on the sides. Add a small black line at the top of the red 'bottom paint' to mark the waterline.
Use cotton 3 strand, unless you can find hemp, to bind the headstock.
A chunk of 3 strand layed out in a circle, terminated with a square note, might look pretty good glued around the bridge.
Depending on the build, consider a bosun's pipe for the bridge.
Might be fun to cut some anchors to be used as fret markers too.
John
All good ideas. I will incorporate some of them: the rope binding, the compass rose around the sound hole, maybe some printing, painting and I think I will set a little Snark Tuner into the headstock.
I'll show it off here before I ship it out.
Thanks guys!
Yup, My normal beater concert scale uke is plywood, built on a Padron 6000-25 box. Sounds okay.
Thanks for the tip about cigarboxdeals.com. I just sent them a query. I reckon I missed seeing that because I'm pretty much immune to side-bar ads on the web.
