Hear a Guitar Made from a 100 Year Old Box

Ever wonder what an authentic Turn-of-the-Century cigar box guitar sounded like?  Me too... so I built some!  (Scroll down for the video.)

"On Saturdays, barbers sat their customers in the shade on the porch of the Store, and troubadours on their ceaseless crawlings through the South leaned across its benches and sang their sad songs of The Brazos while they played juice harps and cigarbox guitars."
-Maya Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

Last week, I went searching for very old cigar boxes at a local antique store.  The tickle in my brain was singing old songs on old instruments.  There were three boxes tucked in three corners of the sprawling store, each one in similar size...and each one ready to become a guitar.

After lovingly bracing up the boxes and carefully cutting out period-correct sound holes, I added a neck and two simple guitar strings.  This is the type of guitar that was played 100 years ago.  The antique boxes deliver the tones like a time machine.

Have a listen...
