Cigar Box (?) Mountain Dulcimer Designs

Having built a few standard CBG's and Strummersticks (almost all 3-strings tuned GDg),, I'm intrigued by the idea of a mountain dulcimer.    I'm guessing the lap-style would be to reverse the…Continue

"Yes you are on the right track. The high string is doubled for more volume and a nice tone and usually much much closer together, (look at an 8 string mandolin or 12 string guitar in the music store)"

These instruments can sound amazing, given their simple materials. I love to hand one to someone who already plays guitar, and see their reaction! CBGs = SMILES!

First CBG Design/build

Posted on March 1, 2014 at 4:26pm 3 Comments

Almost finished my first (non-kit) CBG of my own design.  It's a fretted three-string, and will likely end up with a piezo-pickup option.  Have not used any fret markers yet, nor cut any sound holes.  Tone actually seems pretty OK with no holes, and it's a really clean look.

I counterbored to recess the screw-together tuners, leaving the main headstock at 3/4".  Used a 5/8" Forstner bit in a hand drill to c'bore about 3/16" deep.

Some tweaking remains to be done, but I think it…

Thanks for the friends request Gary, accepted with pleasure.

I've been involved with a national classic off road motorcycle club in the UK for many years and helped set up their internet forum, on which I was also a moderator for a long time.....Let me tell you that I've had more warmth and response in one day on this excellent site than in a long time on there.....and I've given blood, believe me......

I feel honoured to be a new member of this fine community...it's a breath a fresh air in a crazy world....

Thanks again Gary, delighted to swap a few lines with you today.

Brian.
