I expect it is tuned to C because you can hear the sea when you hold a shell to your ear

Going to make one. Don't really need sound. Son--in-law plays acoustic, but daughter is a beach nut. Most likely will end up on the wall.

Put something in to make it resonate. Maybe glue in a loose spring or snare strings. I've seen the spring put into cigar boxes to make extra noise

The clam is held down by the string. The stick is notched just a bit to account for the irregularities. A drop of ca helps.... This is definitely a novelty. The clamshell is not a good resonator...
