I own one, that I purchased from Timbre Land Whiskey Band's bass player last year, and can attest to its viability as a proper bass. You need a big box to bounce those low frequencies around in. The U Bass is about 3" deep , so one way to accomplish this with an existing box is to split it, to maintain the top and bottom, and build an internal box that you attach the preexisting box top and base to. This will get you more box volume. Another, far easier way is to use a wine box. There are examples of same in Way's links. Yet another way is to dimension and build your own box. It's not that hard. As far as neck wood goes, Jarrah would work, as would oak or mahogany.
