I plan to convert an acoustic guitar to a resonator. I'm choosing between a right side up angelfood cake pan or an inverted stainless mixing bowl for a resonator. Any experience or thoughts out there?

Sorry, not I, I am looking forward to the responses though. I too have been thinking of this as I have several acoustic guitars. Many pics already on this can be found and researched. Lots of good talent at CBN.  Good luck

Why not a dog food bowl? I built a cat food versoin Into a cigar box, and it sounds great! Th fit is good, too. It has a nice lip for mounting, andnothing funny about out dropping a floating bridge on it. Plus they come in lots of sizess.

Or that maybe, but this is an acoustic guitar, so looking for what sounds best and has best volume.

My experience with metal bowls has been somewhat hit or miss. Some have good resonance when hitting them and some are just duds.

Stewmac.com the guitar supply company has some 9" to 11" resonator cones for as little as 30 bucks. There's other companies out there as well that have guitar sized cones and CBG sized cones.

I certainly considered that, but improvising is too much fun. I have some sauce pan lids with a lovely ring to them, but their thickness would, I am guessing, kill volume.

How about cookie tin lids? Danish butter cookies tin would probably be large enough, just have to eat your way through it though.

Picture shows: Guitar in the middle is the one I converted with hole cut for resonator cone. The guitar on the right is my regular reso guitar I build. The other photo is of the completed conversion. It has two pickups, one magnetic and an acoustic [Fishman] on the cone.

Hi, I have done this conversion some years ago and it was very successful, however I did use  a good quality resonator cone. If I was doing it again, even to save money, I would not use the "cones" you mentioned, {there's also a hubcap} as they sound a bit ordinary/lacking. There is a lot of work to do the job properly in a full acoustic guitar, and for that amount of work I'd at least like a good acoustic resonator sound/tone. But that's me, and I do understand the thrill of trying something different.

I have built a number of CBG resonators using dog bowl, large dog bowl and proper resonator cone and the one that comes out on top is the proper resonator cone CBG.

Having said all that, I have a great hubcap to use in a future resonator guitar build, but it will not be in an acoustic guitar body, I having it planned for a solid body electric.

Anyway good luck with your build, I look forwards to the end result.

Cheers Taff

Very nice work. Part of the joy of the project, for me, is the junkyard nature of it. We'll see.
