Paul Craig replied to Joe Williams's discussion Amp wattage
"Low price to answer your question. Size of the speaker can also have a lot to do with the clean sound, distortion and clipping. I have a 1watt Ruby amp that I built that does great cleans and decent distortion because it has a 6" 10watt…"

"Well, that leads to what will seem like a really simple question then, but I've never been interested in amp stuff until recently and know very very little. I've seen DIY amp circuitry as high as 15 watts, still powered by a 9V battery. If…"

Cause the Blue rat replied to Joe Williams's discussion Amp wattage
"The more watts the cleaner the sound will be at mid to higher volumes. Clipping starts when you start to overwork the amp. Most one to two watt amps start to clip or distort at low volume levels. "

"Sure I'd love to see it. I mostly play what amounts to a big steel string baritone uke. I love my little amp, but I'd like to be able to shave just a little off the top."

Paul Craig replied to Joe Williams's discussion tone/gain
"I think they where referring to the same thing because of some people calling it a tone. The little Artec amps have a place to connect a Gain pot, some amp cards require the removal of a cube pot with a set amount of gain(has a little screw on top)…"

"I understand that. My question related to the fact that in the video on this site about adding an external gain pot to the Gitty amp it says (approximately) "adding a panel mount tone/gain control to this amp." Their use of the term…"
Jun 9
Paul Craig replied to Joe Williams's discussion tone/gain
"A Gain pot does effect the tone, but it isn't the same thing. Gain adds mild distortion and overdrive to the output by adding more output level. Tone changes the sound from bright(setting of 10) to dark(setting of 1) changing the amounts of…"

tone/gain

I'm very new to messing with electronics. I built a little amp with the Gitty/Artec board. It really needs a tone control. I've watched the video on adding a panel mount gain control to it. At the beginning they refer to adding a tone/gain control. Does that mean that adding either pot to the same place, in the same way, will produce either desired function?See More

"Probably not much, I had a 6 C cell (9v) radio & tape player that I wired directly to the car's electric system (12+v) and it didn't fry"

Timothy Hunter replied to Joe Williams's discussion More power
"probably ok. most wall power pack are not well regulated. i bet if you measured the output it would be around 18V"
