Just "stumbled upon" the Unprofitable Instruments page. Lots of ideas to steal^H^H^H^H^Huse in smaller and bigger projects...

BTW: I created the discussion because there was apparently no place for dropping links to strange, interesting, silly or plain stupid instrument designs found on "da Net".

The title of the thread may be a bit misleading, with the proud prices they should really be profitable.

Cool stuff! Thanks for the link!
Interesting stuff from Germany (english version):

Ships among the stringed musical instruments: guitarrons - the mellow giants of the low tone country.

My guess would be that the igil falls into the interesting category?  Not necessarily this one. :)

Nice video. Found another one, the guy actually plays an instrument resembling a CBG ;-)

This is called a morin kur when I found it I thought is was funny because my last name is Morin. Morin Kur means horse head instrument. If you could see the headstock clearly you would see a horse hed at the top.

Morin khuur

orig. Mongolia  With its name translating to "horse fiddle" in Mongolian, the morin khuur is instantly recognizable by its distinctive carved horse-head pegbox. The tuning pegs on either side are known as the "horse's ears." The instrument’s two string and bow are traditionally made of horsehair, although they are now often made of synthetic material.

The morin khuur plays a prominent role in Mongolian music and culture. It is used to accompany folk singers and, less frequently, as a solo instrument and in small ensembles. Traditionally, the people of Mongolia are nomadic herders, and the morin khuur's evocative shape and ability to imitate the sound of neighing horses reflect the importance of the horse to Mongolian national identity

It's called matouqin in Inner Mongolia, China. New instruments are usually tuned with guitar tuners, the "pegs" are only a decoration. It's a really fine instrument. During my last business travel I could listen to a live performance. The most prominent (IMHO) musician playing the morin khuur (he consequently uses the Chinese name of the instrument in interviews, though) is master Ci Bulag, of Inner Mongolia, PRC. He plays it solo and with his ensamble (I think their name is "Galloping Horses"). Check youtube, he's a great musician.

P.S. congratulations on such a "musical" name, Roger!
