Hey peoples, been looking around for a suitable vice for making my CBG necks, the variety is enormous. I was thinking two normal vices, but that's a bit overboard.I don't have a lot of room to work so I was thinking a simple drill press vice attached to my table would suffice, or even the guitar vice on the stew mac website, could anyone recommend something?

Regards

Brett

I use double sided sticky tape to hold down my necks to work on them. Not a long strip, just a couple of short strips will do.

I sometimes use this vise though:

Brian, that's awesome and pretty good price too, cheers!!

This is what I use...the best vice you will get for the money
This type works well, as long as you don't have to really bear down on the neck. Not as forgiving to 'slips' though.

I heartily agree with Mr. Anderson's choice - here it is at a slightly better price: http://www.grizzly.com/products/Parrot-Vise-/H3302

Now I don't want you to get jealous, but I live about 35 miles from a Grizzy Store, and they even sell guitar parts. I buy my frets and tuners from them. You can get a 20' guitar cord as low as $10.00 and they work good to.

Actually I'm pretty blessed -- I live only 30 miles from Springfield Missouri, where I can buy hardwood, cigar boxes, and guitar parts. It's a Cigar Box Guitar builders dream.

Well, bring you're in Australia, I don't know if you can get this but I use this. We have a store called Harbor Freight. They might ship or if you know of someone in the US.

I find that the best vice is the one I haven't tried before but going back to the old stand by of bourbon or beer isn't a bad choice either.

Now if you're talking about a vise (and I think you are) then I have one on my bench that does a pretty good job. I made it using a wood tap and die, some dowels and some cabinet grade maple. The maple jaws don't mar up the piece I'm working on.
