I love listing to Lightin Hopkins play the blues.  I have not been able to locate a TAB for a 3 string CBG that would show me his basic riff.  I am tuned to Open G, GDG.  Any assistance will be appreciated.

Thanks Dick Dowd

Which song? I'll give a listen to and see what I can do for ya.

Baby Please Don't Go.  Almost any song he ever did has this same riff in it.

Ok, here's an Advanced level 6-string tab from ultimate guitar:

https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/l/lightnin_hopkins/baby_please_don...

Now what you gotta do, is map these 6-string chords to 3-string tuned GDG. This thread shows the process:

http://www.cigarboxnation.com/forum/topics/how-to-map-your-fretboar...

And some video lessons:

Even found a 3-string CBG version:

I've listend to four different versions of 'Baby Please don't Go' and still have no idea what riff your talking about. Point me to a single song on youtube. Then the exact time mark to the start and finish of the riff you need.

It may be after Christmas before I'm able to work on it. But I'll get it up as soon as I can.

Rat,

I did the same thing, and furthermore watched 5 or 6 vids of Lghtnin' doing different tunes. I can't figure out which riff he's talking about, either. They're all different tunes, with different rhythms. Unless he's talking about the standard "blues shuffle" rhythm, played on the A and D strings at the 2nd and 4th frets. You know: "bump da dump da bump da dump da bump da dump da bump da dump da..."

I think he's referring to the line similar to the opening line of Hooker's Boom,Boom, Boom, Boom

I went out looking for the riff and found this.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHwySaWE9dE

The first song, 0-1:34 Is almost like an intro.  In the second song, Rainy Day, he goes into a riff that starts with I believe 12th fret, using his index finger that starts with tripelets, da,da,da,da,da da. da. da. then a turn around.  All I can find this on is a 6 string.  I am trying to get it on a 3 string CBG tuned in Open G.

well that took a five seconds to learn. But still need to know if it's the right one.

Boom Boom Boom Boom starts like,

Slid up to the second string 9th fret

Pop fist string 9th frt.

hit second string 9th

open second string to second fret second string twice.

Chords. played in a quick two stroke shuffle. da da.....da da....da da.....da da.

third string 4rth fret second string 2nd frt.

second and first string open.

bar second and fist string on 2nd fret.

riff

hesitate off the 3rd frt to the 5th frt second string.

second string open to 2nd fret on second string twice.

Same three cords as above.

first string 7th fret pull off to ghost note on 5d frt first string

second string 7th fret.

second string open to 2nd fret on second string twice.

chords

all on first and second string. only play these two strings.

bar at 2nd, 5th and 7th back to 2nd fret.

Hammer from 5th to 7th then 7th on second string

second string open to 2nd fret on second string twice.

first three cords.

and the rest is up to you!

Still need to hear from ya Dick! Looking forward to helping.

Not sure we are on the same page.  I found an instructional video only it is on a 6 string.
