I have a piece of walnut (dark)...I don't want to fret the guitar as it's a slide only version.
How can I contrast fret lines against the dark walnut wood
The guitar is like a lap steel guitar. Don't want to bleach...
I was thinking white paint but that sounds not so great...hmm
Any thoughts. Thank you

Hmmm interesting ...maybe I could put em on without glue at first see how it looks and functions...I suppose painting white lines or cream as you mention could be good as you don't need to press down on frets...I just was thinking walnut is so nice why skimp on nice frets...oh well huh.

Here's the link to the cable tie idea posted by Rooster:

I painted white fret lines on my red dyed neck - but after staring at it for a while decided it looked horrendous, just out of place if you get my drift so IMHO avoid paint.
Wayfinder's mentioning of the cable ties is something I also was considering along with wooden matches and toothpicks. I want to finish mine today so I better think think fast ;-)

Actually started as a whoops, but turned out nice.  Veneer.

These are all great suggestions !!! Hey wow...not sure yet but I like the idea also of squares being painted notating the fret borders...
Very cool ideas here

I am making up some walnut necks also.  Since I am using round toothpicks in 1/16 in holes at the fret line for side marks, maybe another just around the corner on the front for the marked frets and similar marks on the other side of the front for the other fret locations.

Other plan is to cut fret slots and fill with maple or cherry  sliver flush with fretboard.

nice.
This is a little off tangent but if I paint a design either acrylic or water base ...let it dry ...can I clear stain something like minwax over that? I want to paint symbols on the guitar and cover with a protective barrier...
This makes sense to try out a sample on scrap... Thanks for this Wayfinder...too many variables without trying on scrap.
I used 1/8 maple strips set into shallow saw cuts. Sand tongue oil and enjoy.

Wow...how did you cut those maple strips so even at first?
I planed a piece of maple to 1/8 thickness and then set a guide up and made strips with a bandsaw. 1/8'is the kerf of my tablesaw.
