I've gotten a few Cigar Box Guitar necks from a guy on eBay, 3 string version made of black walnut. Can anyone advise me what kind of finish I might put on them. I notice that handling the unfinished walnut leaves spots from the oils on my fingers. I will, of course, sand the whole thing to reduce those spots. But after that, what kind of finishing product is good to apply to protect it going forward? (I'd prefer a NON-glossy finish, natural looking, not shiny)

thanks,
/Mark

If you're going with a "finish" I like tung oil. Formsby makes a nice finish.

If you are avoiding the finish all together, then try Dunlop Lemon Oil. I used that on my first fretboard, which is Peruvian Wanut, and it seems to be holding up well.

I really like the look of these CBG's that have the "tail pieces" on them.
Are they for show?
Are they kinda like stands for upright playing?

I usually keep em just for looks.  Also a handy place to put a strap button.

I love Danish oil for necks, easy to work with and has a nice low sheen and soft feel.

I use Truoil on mine and you can rub it down with some steel wool if you don't like it shiny.

Mark, did you ever get the problem with the pickup solved?

I use Tung oil on my necks. Two coats is typically all you need and if leaves a very soft feel and a subtle , low gloss sheen. I use it on maple, walnut, and oak. good luck!!
