I've used watercolour from a tube to darken the wood, the distress with various hard objects so it penetrate the finish then use darker paint rubbed in with a sponge and wiped off while wet leaving darker paint in the dints. finish with wire brush coarse s/ paper etc. try out on a bit of scrap see how you get on...

Thanks....ill do some testing of both ideas to get right...watch this space!

I've used a wash made out of acrylic paint mixed with water. Rub it on, and then rub it off right away. Gives a dull uneven finish.

Nice thanks

I've seen a suggestion on another thread to use tea or coffee wiped on with a sponge or cloth to make a box or image look older.

i used to do that to make 'treasure maps' when i was a kid. that was a long long time ago. lol

I use old reliable steel wool and vinegar as a wash.

Thinned artist acylic paint works well and you can still finish with Tru-Oil or other finish over it.  I use a brush and rag and mix my colors to get the effect I want.

I have also used multiple light coats of spray paint and sanded them back to make it look kind of funky and vintage.
