Hi all, I'm building a cigar box mandolin, and I'm wondering if anybody has any advice as to how to re-enforce the body so I can put the full 8 strings on it. does anyone know how I should do it? All advice is much appreciated thanks (I will be making the boxes from scratch, so advice on woods, and thicknesses is also much appreciated )

If you do a thru neck that should def be sufficient, just don't give the top too much clearance to flex in a few mm is enough
Ok, thanks guys, one thing, my project is going to have changeable sound boxes on the sides, so the sides either side of the strings, best way to describe it is I'll have a box cut in 3parts, centre and two sides, and the sides will be changeable so I can change the sound of it by putting different shaped sides on it, so the question is, I'm trying to re enforce the top centre strip, that will be on top of the neck, will it still be enough with a thru neck, because the top will be supporting the tension of the 8 strings, and it'll be joined at only 2points, what I'm thinking of doing is making a solid rectangle and turning it side on to make a centre piece, and will that be enough, if I've explained this badly, sorry, but thanks for your advice
You're rebuilding Les Paul's Epiphone Log?? He took an Epi, split it down the middle, then used a thick pine board for essentially a thru-neck, then attached the split Epi to either side of the Log. The ability to change the size of the resonating chamber is an interesting idea...
Yeah, sort of, but mine will be a completely hollow body (apart from a through neck) so it has a fuller sound and I'm trying to work out how to re enforce it
Uh... Isn't that profile pic one of juju's?.
Not sure who he is, I just found it on the web and thought it looked epic
Also this is the rough sketch of the mandolin
Sorry last one was terrible, this is a better pic

Yes, that's one of my mate JuJu's 6 strings.

Oh, we'll tell him I recon it's EPIC!!!
P.s. Thanks for letting me know, I've been wondering who made it
Hey Phrygian kid and everyone else, sorry I haven't talked, I've been busy with assignments, just wondering, how much clearance I will need to give the top, from the thru neck, I'm not too sure bout that, and also if you know juju, or have contact with him, could you or if anyone else has advice or can help, please please please ask him about the woods he used for parts and thickness if possible, I just really really love the grain and colour, also, just wondering, will I be able to use traditional mandolin woods like cedar, to make a cigar box mandolin the normal way, or do I have to edit it? E.g, side woods the same type top the same and bottom the same, but just square?
