A related question to the CANJO but for CBG's in general

Last one I made, I used a generic 4 wire humbucker and used a "rotary split pot along w/ a volume control

that way I could 'dial in; a single coil if I wanted or leave it wide open hummer

BUT in a lot of the books and articles I've read on build guys do they either make or use an acoustic guitar piezo type pickup.

well lo and behold I actually have a spare one laying around the parts box, and was wondering if any of you had ever used one of those on your TIN bodied devices?

I know they sound OK on the typical CBG especially the ones made with wood boxes, but I havent seen one used in a canjo or a CanTar or the rest

Anyone out there tried?

Just wondering how it turned out with the tin body, AND did you use the typical pre-amp EQ box or did you just go it alone as so many of the builder articles suggest?

Thanks

I've seen it done, just make sure it's encapsulated.  I like double stick foam. . .

thats an interesting thoight how did it sound?

Many builders use piezos for pickups on cbgs and/or canjos. Whether you use the disk type that can be mounted anywhere, or the rod type that go under the bridge saddle, one thing remains constant...if you want the best sound for the effort, use a preamp. First, unless your amplifier has dual inputs (one for normal and one for high output), or if the amp is not made for acoustic amplification, the piezo impedence is too high, and will sound like crap...imho.

IF you don't have a preamp, and/or aren't sure how to install on the tin box, there are a number of buffer circuits that are easy to make with a few dollars worth of components and 30 minutes of time soldering...and can be installed directly inside the tin box, rather than having to cut a rectangular hole on the side for the preamp.

I have a preamp, but its much bigger than id like to use, if you have alink for one of those circuits that would be great

thanks!
