I have built 3 cbgs and have run into the same issue every time.  I haven't used the scarf joint method.  I've just cut/sanded the head to about 5/8" (I can't remember exactly) so that the tuners can fit with room to wind some string.  The problem I have run into is that the angle from the nut to the tuner post is almost 0.  I have had to do some fanagling to fix this.

Have any of you had this issue when using a straight neck design and not an angled head/ scarf joint?

I have started 2 more builds, but these are using a scarf joint neck design.  Without having a lot of tools, this has proven to be a pain in the butt.  I'm kinda making it up as I go... but I guess that's part of cbg building.

That's the only method I use, I never had any trouble. Could you post a picture of one of your builds....maybe we can help better by being able to see the issue.

ps- this is after some adjusting

Hi Dogface, have a look at some of the pics on my page. I cut out the recess from the headstock then glue that piece to the underside... I had the same problem on my first build but this way works fine! Obviously this means you need to remove this section as one piece - but this shouldn't be a problem with a half decent hand saw. I like the Japanese style ones.

Here's a pic for you:Hope this helps!

string tree or brass screw loop will help...

a simple string retainer   should   work  with  your design ,  you   could also add  some meat to  the   back  of the head stock   , thus    lowering the   tuner shafts  ..   you  can  also  apply presure   to  the strings while   winding them on  . and    make them  wind  down as  they  wrap  .

these are a few easy  fixes without changing your design    to  drastically

Here here.

I'd say after looking at your pic that you can make it work fine one that guitar without changing anything but the strings. Always wind strings on under load (ie pulling back on it with the other hand) just like any winch it wants to wind up under load to keep the winds neat. And start with just enough string to fill the post but not so much that it starts winding over itself. This takes practice to judge, because of the varying string thicknesses, a low e string will do barely two laps where a high e might do twenty.

Here is one of mine. Like pick said, if u leave your strings longer you can get them to wrap downward....You should be fine. All the other ideas are a bit more involved, but work just as well.

a high nut will help, also i usually include a string tree on my straight head necks...

First off you need to wind more string on to the tuner pegs ( I put 3 winds ) that will give you more of a angle then like the others have said add strings trees or a simple screw will do  , I tend to cut my headstock down to 15mm (9/16th) so about 14mm time it's sanded . and i'd make the headstock longer next time to allow room for strings trees .

Well as it appears to be show and tell time I'd say for the future consider this if you don't have the tools for a scarf join, it's only a drill and a couple sharp chisels away, super string and plenty down action ;)

i do the scarf joint. and i do it without power tools. its not that hard to cut with a hand saw. the trick is to get the two pieces glued and clamped without sliding
