I have a uke that needs a bone apron for the bridge and a cbg that needs a bone nut. So I bought some beef bones from the market, boiled them for 10 minutes, let my dog suck the marrow out... now what?

Before cutting should I boil them longer? Bleach them? Not sure how to proceed.

nope, just cut em up into blanks on the bandsaw then clean up on a belt or disc sander.

try not to breathe the dust.

i dont even cook em at all i just get bones that have been tossed to a dog some time ago, anyone with a dog will have a few in their backyard

I'll give that a try. I don't have a bandsaw though, will have to use a tablesaw.

Be very careful !

Maybe consider some kinda sled/sliding jig to keep fingers safe

I saw some hollow beef bones at the pet store the other day. Not the flavoured kind, just plain bone. Those could probably work as well.

I use those hollow beef bones all the time as well-already cleaned and hollowed out from the store for $2.00. I have yet to finish using the entire bone and it's been nearly a year now.

BTW Wormil, I don't have a bandsaw either, and the idea of getting my fingers within severing distance of my tablesaw gives me screaming fits. I just place the bone in a vise, don my dust mask and use a Dremel rotary tool to slice out strips, then go to town with a dual-sided metal rasp and finish with 120 grit sandpaper-it isn't a quick process but I end up getting what I need ...

Dremel sounds like a good plan.

I use those with success, the larger cutoff wheel is good. Beware the smell, a g/f:wife might bitch.

Did someone say bones

what's with the bag of 'bone dust' ......?

I use it as a filler when i do my bone inlay

ok.. i just found if the bone is 'Fresh' it cuts easily with a hacksaw , the idea of using any kind of power saw make me shudder.

btw do you mix the dust with pva or something?

thanks for the tips ..J

Awesome "bags a bones" there, Randy!
