I was studying my open G fretboard map yesterday and was wondering are there some set rules that i can follow regarding combining notes to produce a pleasing sound, what runs of notes or combinations of notes work well together, what are the Do's and the Don'ts?

Any top tips folks for a total beginer?

Hello Steve,

Give this a try to start:

Open string, Fret 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 12 (Major Scale)

Or:

Open string, Fret 3, 5, 7, 10, 12 (Pentatonic Scale)

Enjoy, Keni Lee

Steve,

Yep. Scales. You can start on most any note, and make a wide variety of pleasing sounds. Follow Keni's advice. Also, allow yourself to " discover" pleasing-to-your-ear note combinations while noodling around. Listen to fragments of your favorite guitar leads; try to duplicate 3, 4 and 5 note runs ( don't try to be Jimmy Page or Joe Satriani all at once!). Notice where these occur on the fretboard. Listen to fragments of piano and horn solos you like; try to work out a few of them, piece by piece.
