Wagon Wheel Cover - Acoustic Sawzall Box Guitar

I haven't recorded this one in awhile and it took me some time to learn to sing it with the 5 string tuning vs. 3 string chord inversions played in the first position. Acoustic cover of OCMS Wagon Wheel. 5-string Sawzall guitar tuned open G.

Just saw Old Crow do this one at the Ryman last month. Love that guitar...gives me all kinds of ideas.

Thanks BUG!  I do love this guitar and it is the second Sawzall box guitar I've made.  If I don't fall too much in love with it, the guitar is for sale.  And I love that little 5W tube amp.  I got it used from the local Guitar Center store and it was my first amp.  Wonder what they would think if I brought the Sawzall guitar into the shop???

Uncle John, I have heard the history with Dylan and OCMS.  Dylan's chord progression and draft lyrics finished up and performed first by OCMS.  I've loved the song since the first time I heard it.

Kool guitar....nice work...fender champ 600 in the backgroud, ya sounds like Lou Reed

Do you know that song's history?   I've heard it was a Bob Dylan song or song fragment that OCMS completed.  Anyway.  Good to do it your way and strong feeling often wins out with songs.

Thanks Uncle John.  I did a video of this song over a year ago on one of my 3 strings.  I sang, or tried to sing, with only G, A and B notes since I've never sung before playing CBGs.  Those note choices are in all the chords and not very far apart at all.  Playing all the chords in the first position made that sound OK whether I was singing the root, 3rd or 5th.

Without the banjo, mando and all the other instruments, I hear this as a blues song at a slow pace and sadder and more heartfelt than the original.  I do love the original, but I don't think I pull it off very well.

With the 5 string tuning, it didn't sound right when my voice went down to A on the D chord with the root note on the 7th fret so I had to learn to sing the root notes, except the Em and I have no idea what note I'm singing there.  Probably a flat diminished minor 9th half-caff soy no foam with mocha.

Surprisingly good.   Surprising because I don't often like anyone's version but OCMS.   I like yours.   Slow pace, simple, and the feeling that you mean what you sing.

True!  Thanks Jim.

Good job Eric. The Sawzall sounds good acoustic and doesn't prompt angry texts from upstairs!
