I'm not for certain it's actual Onyx per say Jim, I have a buddy that lays tile and he turned me onto this stuff (he calls it Onyx as I'm not sure if he knows exacly what it is). I use regular wood tools to cut it with the exception of when I cut the string slots, I use a triangular metal file to do that. My guess is it's a close relative of Corian.

P.S. I use onyx for the nut because I too hate the dentist smell of bone  :-( Going to give Corian a shot too as we have one of our customers at the Driftwood that is an installer.
