Banjo Build Diary: Day 5 [Primary Assembly]

I decided to build one of the American Banjo Kits from Carver Banjos. This is the fifth video in a series that will cover all the steps involved in building the banjo. During this episode, I trim the excess skin off the drum, attach the neck, and install the tuning pegs.

You can buy this banjo kit here: https://carverbanjos.com/product/americana-banjo-kit/

There's a playlist that contains all the videos in this series here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwIixlr7C6KVG1LV-W4W8KxblRgMHnzG5

It's new to me too Doug but I'm having fun.

I’m enjoying the build. Don’t know much about banjos, so this has been interesting. Looking forward to hearing you play it!

Thanks t-belly. I'm glad someone noticed the Elvis tapestry. LOL. The trim piece along the skin edge is a great idea. In retrospect, I should've just gone to the store and bought more blades.

I have to admit I was a bit concerned seeing you use a regular shaving blade! I was waiting to see a red speckled banjo skin! Thank Dog that didn`t happen!

I was thinking that maybe a nice trim could be glued around the edge of the skin just to make a clean, straight edge. Then again that`s probably just me being fussy!

Look forward to the final installment and of course to hearing you play it. Bon apetite!

Oh, by the way, I love how at the end of the video you had Elvis singing and rocking in the background ;)

John, I too thought the drum would be the hardest part but it's not bad and yes... I should put some glue on there.

Dave, I was thinking that too. I followed Brian's instructions but if I was to do it again, I'd probably trim it while wet.

Nice Kale. I trim while wet as the skin begins to dry. Very easy to cut then.

I had looked at those kits in the past.  The drum head part kind of scared me off.  Yours drums great!   I don't want to make any tacky comments, but maybe you should put a dab or two of glue on the tear.
