We all have a ultimum ,our own HOLY GRAIL in guitars or CBG's.
To Get.Buy, or Build!
Whats YOURS?
This TERRAPLANE custom from John Dawson Winter III is one of mine , a custom build by this brand today is allmost 10000 dollar a Build, far out of reach for my wallet.
But they are out there the ultimo Slide Guitar ,players like Sonny Landreth play on this for me a "HOLY GRAIL"

The tube amps are definitely heavier and banging them around can damage the tubes which can sometimes sound better for awhile at least. ;) But that can get expensive fast.
Andries I hope its just the caps that need replaced like my Silvertone needs, but it could need new tubes if it got banged around a lot. My Silvertone still has the original tubes in it with the name printed on them. It will get the caps and resistors replaced soon. May do some mods to it.
Must say that I've always been attracted to the Gibson Reverse Firebird as well as several Gretsch guitars
I really have a problem. ;)
Most of my amps have tube reverb, but I own quite a few reverb units, so I’m never without it, I don’t mind lugging around gear, it’s the price you pay for good tone?
Must agree on that Paul! use to gig whit the Fender twin reverb ,a monster of a amp, went over to marschall (played bass at the time ) still use both had some odbrands in the 80 ,most of them i blew up transister cant take the power like a tube, but now that all the wild hair is gone ! i use fender again, transister thistime allthow its ageing( giving off tones we dont need !) i Have a small birdy 20 watts from aria, thats bin whit me for years, did put in a new and stronger speaker in tho, have aJay amp yes believe it or not but its sturdy and super clean! and i have been looking at a fender honey tone, custom around 800,-euro,s to exspencif and dont realy need it, but my hondred watt needs new tubes and a tune up !
My amp has the Tremolo circuit in it too. I like it, but I'd rather have a tube powered spring reverb like the Fenders had.
When it comes to gigging, doing setups and hauling, then solid state is a great way to go. The Modeling amps have some tube tone to them, but often end up sounding somewhat thin. That can usually be handled with the right speaker or a PA and a good sound man. The new Boss Katana 100watt and 50watt are pretty good as far as I know, been tempted to get one from Sweetwater on credit. 5 preset tones, 5 effects and a 12" speaker for $220 to $399 is a great deal.
Yea, good stuff, US Silvertone amps are awesome, but the overseas manufacture stuff from late sixties til now ruined their reputation? I’m playing through a 10 watt Danelectro with tube tremelo right now, it’s from 63’,real swampy tone. I’m not a fan of solid state unless it’s a Kustom or an acoustic amp, I basically use them for intonating guitars.
I had solid state back in the 80's and 90's and was never satisfied with the tone I was getting. Got a Tube amp recently and I'm sorry I didn't have one back in the day. If I had one then, I may have never given up on single coil pickups. Now I want to try everything through it.
I have a 1965 Silvertone 1482 amp that I found on the side of the road and fixed back to usable, wonderful tones from this amp.
I have 59’ bassman, 66’ JTM & 74’ plexi & 83’ JCM 800 to name a few, all good amps. But they were all good back then? They started to get generic in late 70’s early 80’s with all the solid state stuff?
Andries, That reso is really nice. I like the upper fret access on that one.
Duesenberg guitars has a Resobro model guitar that can activate a reso bridge tone or play like a regular guitar and they sound great. Very pricey too.
How about amps?
1957 Fender Tweed Bassman is what Jimi Hendrix used on many of his early recordings.
70's Marshall JTM's and 80's Plexi's are right at the top as well.
True Les did threaten that, didn't like the SG at all and the DC LP was tolerated or Gibson told him they were going to produce them anyway.
Some people like them and some don't. I like the style/look of them and the slab body. P90's, what's not to like?
Les didn't care for the P90 pickup either because of the noise. He did like the "Staple" P90 though because they are quiet compared to the regular P90 with screw poles, they are great for Jazz.
