How do I get that 1960-70 rock amp sound?

Hi
I'm looking for tips to sort out my live sound
and get a great rocking sound from my amp and CBG

Has anyone got any tips?

I think valves is the only way to go
but what's the best amp pedal combo for some
great rocking sounds?

Or do I just need to add an overdrive?

As I need a fatter sound.
(AC/DC, 70's rock kinda thing with some 60's
Cleaner songs too)

All help or fun is appreciated

Keep rocking
Bug

Ps using a 4 string an P bass pickup
Plus a 3 string and single double hotrail
Pup
Six string goldfoil (which works ok for sound)

Playing Cambridge hence would like help to sort
Before then if anyone fancies giving me some tips?

Well, the quest for "ultimate tone" has led virtually every guitarist to GAS: gear (or guitar) acquisition syndrome. If you can afford it, great. if you can't, approach tone the way you would haiku: in a strict haiku form, you have exactly 17 syllables to express two or three rather complicated interlocking thoughts. Western music has 12 tones and 8 notes. Most CBGs have 3 or 4 strings. All of these are limitations,l which are amazingly useful to help you focus. Many of the truly great guitarists had one (yes, ONE) recognizable tone, involving plugging a specific guitar directly into a specific amp, and letting it rip.

And sounding better sounds different live than it does on recording, so already you're chasing shadows ( which is both a great song title and band name, and has already been used both ways:

Digglydog, right on the money there..nicely put about chasing shadows, once you start the quest for the ultimate tone or whatever, it's bound to end in permanent frustration and a waste of time.

Plug your guitar in, play and stop worrying.

Agree with the Diglydog. Unless you have built a teleporter, and want to travel back to Woodstock...or have a ton of spare cash on hand. This is why amp modeling has become so popular. You can get all those classic tones in one box (or pretty reasonable facsimiles thereof), for 1/5 the cost of just the 100W Marshall head.

Bug, are you sure you're not just chasing shadows ?

Back in the 70s (early 80s for me), the music was loud, the room was smoke-filled and we were listening through lots of pints of whatever we could afford.  I have memories of great-sounding rock but if I listened to that sound today, sober, it may not be quite so good.

You have some pretty good amps.  Just work with what you've got and make a sound that you like.  As Fleetwood Mac said: "Yesterday's gone. Yesterday's gone".

Bug, what u need my friend is a Marshall with an MXR Distortion +,DOD OD250 or an old green Ibanez Tube Screamer. That combo seems to get that 70's hard rock sound for me,straight dirt rock!!! I.ve seen AC/DC several times and believe it or not he runs straight into a 100 watt Marshall with a little reverb,no pedal board, just a standard 2 button marshall footswitch.
