Step 1 - Cutting Down the Face of the Headstock

In order to get a better break angle of the strings over the nut, I usually cut down the face of my headstock by about 1/4". To do this, I use a hand saw to cut a bunch of slots across the width of the headstock at about 1/4" depth. Then I use a chisel to break out these little blocks of wood as shown in this photo. The break angle can also be "increased" by gluing on a fretboard and by cutting a slot in the headstock for the tuners. With a good break angle, the strings won't need string trees as much to route the strings where they need to go and to hold them in place.
