A friend of mine, Dennis Hansen, who makes carved top mandolins uses shellac and has great results. His work is beautiful. Good choice David.....

At last I choosed shellac. I've fiished yet 2 session with 9 layers of it and it is getting shiny!

I like rub on poly varish. Minwax. I know the acoustical issue would stop many from this choice, but i can't tell any difference. It is easy to use and you can't mess up too bad with it. I like natural wood, so stain is eliminated. The varnish darkens the wood to a warm tone.

Thank you Dave:) Uncle my ogre is that damn  finishing. The more I read about it the less I know how to do that. I've never done it before and I don't want to mass it. Water based stain and lacquer or hard oil not good becouse it goes too deep in the wood and changes the acustical qualties, nitro lacquer spraying with aerosol can seems too risky, french polish seems very complicated.  What would you choose?

Good story,  but it could have used a dragon, orc or ogre.

Once upon a time I heard old blues song called grease green:) It was Pink Anderson and I immediatly got addict to that old guitar sound. Then I saw a prewar 00 style Martin guitar and I fall in love with it. So I decided to build one. I rode out and searched the woods of  Lóthlórien to find a piece that shines and sing like virgin elves on full moon night. But I only found a piece of spurce stair step wood some maple and mahogany. I started to build but the curse of the elves overhelmed me and I cracked the maple side when I was bending. I was just about to say something very ugly but suddenly a piece of alder called my name and said: David use me I will bend like the velvet waist of your queen when you hold her in your arm! So what could I do? I bent that alder and bent it and... anyway I was cutting and sanding and gluing and sanding and routing and sanding and sanding again and the four woods merged in a new form and I hope they will sing like the sunlight untill the end of the world!
