Maddog, I do like shorter scales, except for fretless.   On fretless, my sloppy play needs the extra leeway the long scale gives.   Ted, I am no expert at all on what strings for longer scales.  I will message you with the strings I most always use.

28" scale...very cool...Uncle John, what gauge strings do you use on it? I am really wanting to build a short scale 3 string bass or something close to it...and 28" that's getting very close. Nice build.!!
