Here's the one I just finished.  Maybe it's how I put it together that it works...but you can see that they don't touch and it's easy to string and tune.

Ah cool I stand corrected. Great job :)

They actually aren't touching.  I've put on and taken off the strings several times while I was tweaking it...not a problem and was easy to do.

  • It is...a couple people asked about it so thought I'd load it.  Thanks

I think you'll find they flare a little less than this mate, so that the offset nut slots are enough to keep each string clear of the neighbours posts. Also when drawing these up, be mindful of the radius of the post itself, (which you have done by drawing in a circle and not just an 'x' bravo) Oily's right tho, it could be done with string trees. I am not saying a straight line is necessary, so that the string doesn't bend in more than one dimension at the nut, only a clear and direct path for each to the tuner post without fouling on another tuner post. It is a mistake (like most :D) that I have made before. Anyway, it is only my opinion, it will work, I just consider it less than optimal. I would not say anything if this were a photo and you'd already built it, but at a concept drawing it does invite constructive criticism. Again, sorry. I do think its an eye pleasing shape for sure :)

There's always string trees centered between the posts closer to the nut and those farther away; but it is much better, as the Kid says, to have a straight path from nut to post for each string. That said, there are very similar looking 8-string and 4-string, respectively, headstocks with flared tuning peg locations like this on mandolins and tenor guitars from the 1920s.

Hi Shanna. Despite it looks great, this is not a great design, sorry. That's because the head flares too much, causing strings 2 &3 to be bent around posts 1 & 4.. This is undesirable for a few reasons, it'll affect tuning stability, but also in the event that string one or four breaks it will be the devil to replace because of its neighbour bending around its tuner post. You'll find it'll wrk better to have the further tuners marginally inside the closer ones rather than outside IMHO. Sorry :)
