Show me a profile shot! Having a piece of wood the thickness of the soundboard run up the neck would do the trick, but I was building this in a class and that was NOT how the teacher was doing it. I've had guitar classes where the body had a step that the soundboard fit into, and that was REALLY a bugger. I'll try it your way next time.

On my paddle box stick dulcimer, you may notice a line of 2mm thick plywood that extends the length of the neck. The way I got around this "bump" where the fretboard meets the soundboard was to simply extend the soundboard the up the neck to the headstock. That way the fretboard will lay flat when it meets the soundboard. The other alternative would be to imbed the soundboard down into the sides of the soundbox, which would have been too difficult to do with hand tools (and my limited woodworking skills). Here's a couple photos to clarify what I'm trying to say:

See the "white line" under the fretboard that terminates at the nut? That's the same 2mm ply veneer I used for the soundboard. Here you can see it on the sound box side:
