The two rows of holes in the cover plate are over screw adjustments for each pole on the pup. Many of the early pickups have this arrangement. Why, I don’t know.

Hey D. It’s a nice toasty red mahogany. Easy to work. It’s good tonewood. And no on the strings. I got flattop bronze acoustic lap strings, 12s.
