It was certainly a learning curve and the length of the process wasn't planned !  For the next one, I'll miss out the PU varnish and just try spraying it with a few coats of lacquer (with a light scuff between coats), then polish.  PU gives good protection but, brushed on, it's thick and uneven.

I just degreased it with meths and then used plain old gloss polyurethane wood varnish. I let it cure for a couple of weeks and then flatted it with 800, 3200 and 12000 grade wet emery.  Then I wiped it over with white spirit, airbrushed it with diluted Humbrol gloss lacquer and then polished it with wood polish.  It's not perfect but at least there's no brush marks. It hasn't flaked yet, but it hasn't been on that long.

It's tricky. While I have varnished over paper cover, I haven't found something that goes over whatever they put on wood and stays on. It flakes. What do you use?

Thanks Glenn. The BHK box looks pretty but the finish is fragile so I decided to protect it with a couple of coats of PU varnish. Then spent about a week trying to restore the mirror finish. Ended up buying an airbrush to spray lacquer it !!
