I use IT cage nuts to tune my metal wire to the right key. A door handle to rest my hand on. No guitar parts!

Thanks, Robert, I'm going to have to try this- good tuners are one of the most expensive things to buy! I'll check out your new album

I uploaded some more photo's of the tuner to a new photo album. Hope it's a bit more clear how I do this.

@Monterey: No it is not hard to tune, just keep turning the screw (the 'hook') until it reaches the right note like a normal guitar tuner. I use a tuner app on my smartphone to get to the precise tuning.

However with metal wire you have to retune a bit more frequently compared to real guitar strings. For the low G I often use a metal wire from a bicycle tire which is more sturdy, although more difficult to handle.

Thanks for the info Robert.  I've seen a lot of DIY tuners, but this I my favorite.

Cool! Is it hard to tune?

@ Daniel: well I'm an IT guy, so I can get them quite easiliy ;-)

You don't have to modify the cage nut itself, but you have to make some kind of ring of thick metal wire piece attached to it so you can tie the 'string' around that. Not too hard, but takes some practice and pliers. You can see it on the photo.

Where did you get the IT cage bolts?  Did you have to do anything to modify them?

PS:  I was looking at ebay vintage boxes and they have gotten really pricey.   I think the folks looking for 'vintage' and relic builds will more often be making their own boxes.  I have 3 in the shop right now.  One almost done and two kind of just on hand.

Not so much.  Looks Like a good thin woods home made box.  Glad it sounds good.   I think it's pretty cool to do a build with no 'real' guitar parts.   The only one I did was a diddley with eye boltt tuner.   The ironic thing is that unless you scrounge used parts - it's cheaper to get parts from Gitty.     Cool build.

Thanks Uncle John, kind of different build but you'd be surprised by the sound.
