I finally realized the neck and box were not bowing but the neck was pivoting when I put tension on the strings by tuning them. I travel a lot with work and usually forget to leave the "room key" in the room and find it in my pocket after I get home. As it turns out the room key (about the size of a credit card) made a good piece of shim stock. I cut 2 pieces and inserted them between the neck and the added 1x2 support. I also added a couple more screws for good measure.

I made this final modification a couple of days ago and it is still in tune and there is no visible sign of a change in the neck angle.
