May be we should have our own T shirts...save on the import duty See attached. Idea pays homage to the Nation design but with a brit twist.

ok Im over the import Blues but not the 8 squid handling they will be first up against the wall come the revolution. However anyone know Julie Andrews e mail address because I picked up my mojo and I have to update my favorite things
I am now the proud owner of back porch #169 a very quality bit of kit well impressed big time,it was all well wrapped and even in tune so my addiction is now established I am still going to build but with the idea of having one first as inspiration this takes a lot of keeping up with, absolutely no judgement on british builds but if anyone is new to all this as I am and wants to get playing asap then big daddys your man its worth the wait and stuff
top quality got my mojo working
anyone remember wem copycats I think I want one please santa
anyway cheers gents thanks for letting me into your world its all good
cheers James

I imported an old Stella guitar from Ebay. If i remember right, there are several elements to what you pay. There's import duty but only if it's over a certain value but it does include shipping costs too. Then there's VAT whether there's tax due or not, then there's Parcelforce £8 for handling the thing. It almost doubled the cost of the guitar by the time I got it.

I thought if your sending over sea. if you send it as a gift, its import tax free.

It gets even worse than that ! While many of us easily trade internationally, British officials seem unable to cope with the concept of different currencies.
So, lets say that you buy something from America for about £200 / $300. The customs slip, which was filled-in in America will naturally say $300. The duty you should be laying is 22% of £200, which is £44. What you actually get charged is 22% of £300, £66, a £22 overpayment !
Just try explaining THAT to them :-(

I used to get away without being charged back in the good old days of 2 dollars to the pound, when I was having guitars shipped weekly from the USA..but then I reckon somebody "marked my card" at the customs shed and I started getting charged duty on everything.

As I say, good old days about 4 years back or so..the postie used to knock the door, tell me there was something to pay, I paid and got my parcel there and then on the doorstep. These days it's a card thru' the letterbox, a trip across the city to pick up the parcel..and for all this hassle time and expense on my part I have the priviledge of paying a 'handling fee'...duty and VAT is fair enough, but the handling charge sticks in my craw..it's totally disproportionate on small value items...its a ransome really....."We've got your goods..come and pay the tax on them... and by the way, we going to make you pay even more for bugger all of a service before we hand the stuff over...have a nice day".

Rant over.

I must be one of lucky ones - Iv bought from the US, China etc etc many times and never been charged import duty.
I think its the luck of the draw, though it depends largely what is written on the customs form ('Gift' is usaually a good one to use), but even so, they check less than 10% of incoming parcels...

Yesterday my Ciger Box Nation T shirts arrived (I ordered the 2 different colours) or should I say my note saying payment due from the post office was delivered - just over £3 in VAT (fair enough) but also a £8 "handling fee" added by the Royal Mail - it turns out for goods over £18 even if 1p duty is due you still get charged the £8 handling fee.

Still on the plus side the T shirts are worth it :o)
