Carl, pickaxe handles are often made from Ash and are excellent to use as necks. If anything, they slightly help to impart a thick bluesy sound to the instrument.
I just use basic hand tools for shaping as it is quite a nice wood to wok with.
A spokeshave will make light work of getting the neck profile you want, I think. It works for me !

Hey U Fellow Brits - any of you guys intrested in a Surface mount slimline Rail Pickup ? will fit either 3 or 4 stringers - total thickness of the pickup is only 10mm - full wood construction - Padauk top , Wenge Base Heres a pic of it - i have only the one left thought i'd offer it here before listing it on Ebay ! if your intrested email me Cheers all - happy building :)

I might have sourced my first hardwood neck. I was wandering around a local car boot when I saw a stall selling tools, so £2.50 got me a hardwood pickaxe handle.

Good job I have an electric planer as that thing will take time to shape.

I do the same with my piezos. I actually encase them both sides with the foam tape, it helps to lessen feedback.
