Hey I love to play open mic nights. Whenever I do, people just oogle my humble builds and i end up sometimes sellin a guit or two. sometimes i just get people interested in building their own, and make new friends. I just got to play, and hey f there turns out to be a sale or new interest, bonus!

Shane,

It took me a while to understand that "it's about the music." I was into 6 months and 60 builds before I was playing out at all. Your advice about "the best selling CBG is the one you play the best" got me going. a year and a half later, I have play open mics, solo concerts and private gigs that paid serious $$$ That's not the important thing... I'm now able to play a concert with nothing but original music.... None of this would happen without you and the revolution/movement... Thanks friend.... rock on tonight.... I'll be thinking of you...

the best,

Wichita Sam

Here's another thing... If you can't play/can't sing, still go to the open mics and find guys/gals that can play and sing and have a decent rep. Usually the guy/gal running the open mic is a pretty decent musician.

Hand em' a CBG tell em' they can take it home for the week if they'll try a song on it at next weeks open mic.

Or if you've got friends that can play/sing, drag them out with you. It's still fun to watch others play your creations. I play mine out and love all the comments after, but I also enjoy watching someone else play a song or two on my hard work!

I go to the Barrington Coffeehouse in NJ every thursday night. Last night I played "Meat" for a sing along and then a song called "Holdin' Tank" which is my tribute to OTIS from the Andy of Mayberry Show.

Before I began the CanJoe Company in 1994, I started out as a performer and due to the high demand generated by these performances, by those who desired to own one of my creations as their own, I readily recognized the need to supply the demand. Shane is absolutely correct about getting out and performing. Because the general public is rarely aware of these cool, unique musical instruments like the CBGs or the canjoes, the public audiences attending are always amazed and intensely entertained by the performances on such instruments, even of performances from only mediocre musicianship in some cases. I literally wore the pulp of the wood away from the finger board of my first instrument with the pick by practicing incessantly until I mastered it before ever publicly performing. But with all my efforts and practice, my first "real" public performance was on stage playing right beside (and by his personal invitation) of Bill Monroe, the "father of bluegrass music". I've been picking and performing ever since, often on many prestigious stages, frequently backed by or accompanied by and/or with major main stream artists and I've even played the Grand Ole Opry with my unique "home made" instrument. I got there by getting out and playing it at every venue possible, at open mics, free events, wherever crowds would gather, and by working hard and intentionally getting "noticed". There's no better way to market or sell these cool out of the ordinary musical creations without repeatedly proving to the public through well played performances that they are "real" and are truly fully functional musical instruments and not just cool looking, home made eye candy "handy crafts" or "toys" that only resemble factory built instruments. I look forward to hearing some of the performances that get posted on this site...CJ*J

I've actually got a gig tonight myself, out in snowy Colorado. One of the things I love about playing out with a CBG is, of course, seeing people's reaction. They've never seen or heard ANYTHING like a CBG before.

And, because there are less strings, it's simpler to play! Less things for me to think about... and in my case, that can be a very good thing. Ha!

I'm hoping I can make an audio recording of it all... if so, I'll share it fo sho.

Until today I looked at this site as a "builders" resource. I admire all of the builders on here and might build one someday but I am a player. I bought mine and it has really helped me to become regrounded in my music because of its simplicity. My CBG inspires me and I'm having a great time getting to know it. I'm using it in the studio right now and will contribute as soon as I have some stuff that is worthy. I hope there is always a place for players on this site.
