Hello again. Just finished my latest lap steel build. Scratch built, has over wound single coil pickup, brushed aluminum hardware. open G tuning.

Thanks for that,Eric.I think I will just build it as I think fit, then (and with whatever materials I have at hand !).By the way,i'm a Gittins, too.I was called Micky Rooney at school as it was my Mother;s maiden name and I was small for my age and  the name has stuck with me ever since. There are not too many Gittins around, are there?!.....

anything on the instrument that vibrates (other than the string) is using the energy you put into the string when you plucked it.  on an electric, the only vibration that gets amplified is the string itself, any vibration through the tailpiece is wasted energy.  keep the vibration in the string, it will last longer = more sustain.

this is the theory, but in reality the timber and the other hardware take some frequencies more than others, and also feed back some vibration, which effects the tone.

this is what i have found leastways.

Hullo Guys n' Gals. Can anyone tell me if taking the strings through the body of a of a lap steel/diddley bow rather than ending the strings at the bridge increases the sustain ?.....
