I've been trying to get myself writing more lately, so I started a blog.

http://howandsometimeswhy.wordpress.com/

My first real post is a how to article about building a primitive lap steel.

(apparently having a blog IS good motivation)

Matte,

Thanks. The bridge is Aluminium angle over wood base. The strings enter the front side and go through the wooden base then do a "180" over top of the bridge. The holes in the front are big enough for the ball to recess and not be seen.

This tries to put the bridge into a twist so I capped the ends with angle and installed 2 screws on each end to compensate.

That looks great Milton!

Is your bridge a bit of angle iron over a wood form? How do you strings terminate?  It looks really interesting!

Maybe this is not new to alot of you, but here is a pretty good free on-line program. You set it for whatever tuning you are in and it will generate chord locations on the neck. Could be a good tool for learning or just expanding your chops.Steel Guitar Chord Locator

Nice wood. Mine are all function, no finesse. Someday I'll do something pretty. And playing is not so tuff if you got a nice plank to spank.

Hey Guys,

I have enjoyed building CBG's for a few months now and got the bug to try a Lap Steel. I've finished my first attempt.

I don't play a lick and I'm a little jealous of you guys who do but I guess I'll be satisfied with hearing someone else play my stuff.

I'm having a blast though.

Check out my pics and tell me what you think.

That looks great. I like the rawness. My first was similar. I love the look of beautifully sculpted wood, but there is something beautiful about being so excited to play an instrument that you put one together from whatever you can find, Music is the playing more than the gear.

Well I threw together my first lap steel guitar this weekend.  It started out as a dumpstered scrap of 2x6.  I added zither pin tuners, an angle iron nut, a candy tin with a couple piezos inside and a screw for a bridge, half a hinge for a tailpiece and some carpet tacks for fret markers.  Now I just need to learn how to play the thing.

Here's a couple photos.  There are more in my photos.

Oh, I'm planning on a six string.

I have a hankering to build a lap steel guitar.  What are folks doing for string spacing? And what's a pretty standard scale?
