sympathetic strings just ring along -- you don't even play them, They just vibrate on their own when you play the same note on another string. Like a echo.

DIane, I am clueless on the sympathetic strings. Are they the same as the strings you play or do you use a different type? Also do you tune them?

A dulcimer with sympathetic strings would be like an langspil (Iceland) or Epinette des Vosges (France). I think. I've never seen them played, but both have the drone strings seperated from the melody strings.

Yes, you can run a router down the middle of back side. Or you can build a hollow fingerboard, too. I've got one with sympathetic strings running down inside the fingerboard -- well, I would if I would finish it. It is next in the queue!

Diane I was thinking and remembered when I bult my original dulcimer (kit the the neck or fret part was hollowed out a little making it like a U beam.. when I asked about this feature I was told that it helped create a better sound..

The original dulicemer tuning is daa the 6.5 fret is an add on you used to stretch the string to get the sound..

An added benifit of the viadcts under the bridge is you have something to attach the capo to.
