This one has a rawhide tamborine head. It's a 16 inch scale dulcimer tuned in G D GG Sounds really neat and old timey Tabak box Don't really need the box but I thought it would look cool with the box!

Maybe an extra string below the bass string tuned high like a ukulele or banjo's 5th string would allow you to strum with a bit different sound, or you might be able to play it claw-hammer style. Called "re-entrant tuning", just an idea.

i,m working on building a lap dulcimer---it will be a crossbreed type of instrument but it will have the look of a dulcimer and can be played like a dulcimer.but because of what i like in an instrument it may be one of a kind maybe.i haven seen anything like it before so it might start a trend in crossbreeding variations. thanks for the group randy.glad to be here.

Here is a picture of my lastest diatonic scale build. This one I'm giving to my sister. It has a piezo transducer and a oak neck with a popular fretboard. The string sizes that I used were .012, .014, and .022 wound. I tuned it to an open G. It is 57mm from the nut to the bridge.

Just finished my first splitstick strummer and I'm loving it. Such a big sound acoustically and just great fun.

It's a beautiful piece Diane. Where did you get those corner pieces on the box? I want some. Are they antiqued copper or what.

The Inadvertent Chromatic Dulcimer:

I think I might have found it a good home -- too many frets for me!

Thanks Randy. The first ever strummer type thingie I ever saw was one of these, up in the mtns. of NC.
-Ash/walnut/ash neck body combo.
-soundboards were cut from the bottom of a big, thin Arturo Fuentes CB.
-25.5" scale

I actually added a finish to this, and my last uke because of the White Ash.
It's fairly coarse feeling even after sanding, so I I used a sanding sealer as a finish. But dudn't follow the can directions. 1st coat, very thin, applied with a paper towel, rubbed in, and wiped off excess. Let dry, LIGHTLY sanded and grain raise, then 1 more coat the same way.
Made the wood grain and the contrast between the woods really pop.
