I should have mentioned these string height measurements are at the first fret. At the 12th fret they could be in the neighborhood of 70 to 90 thousandths.
Welcome to the addiction Rich. Madgomer is dead on in his reply, but if you want some measurements as a starting point these are my recommendations. I'm assuming your neck is a standard 1 x 2 (an inch and a half wide.) Place your middle string dead in the middle, and place your outside strings 3/16 of an inch in from the edge of the fret board. String height depends on if your guitar is fretted or fretless. If it's fretted, I recommend a string height of something like 40 to 60 thousandths of an inch from the top of the fret to the bottom of the string. I find that high enough to be able to play slide, but still low enough to finger the notes comfortably. If it's fretless you can, and probably should, go quite a bit higher.. With experience you will be able to dial in these measurements to what suits you.best.
Hi all. I am building my first 3 string CBG. The thing that is puzzling me now is STRING HEIGHT and STRING SPACING. Any advice? Are there any rules of 'thumb' I should be following Cheers
So you’re trying to cancel out that resonater effect? I would use a block of wood down the center, make it touch area under the plate at the bridge, it’ll cancel out the tinny vibration? If you run it through length of the body, you’ll have a spot to anchor your pickups, just cut the plate so the wires don’t touch or better yet, tape the sides so they can’t contact the plate? Good luck on this :)
starting a customer build .What pickups work with metal signs about the same as a license plate thickness. Wanting to avoid a banjo sound
