Hi all, I'm looking at buying my first band saw as there is a reasonably priced saw in my local area for $200 and this fits my budget perfectly.
Its a Hafco Metalmaster bandsaw, 110mm Cutting depth 245mm table, and that's all of the information given.
So what questions do I need to ask the seller about this saw, I'm not sure what are the right questions to ask him and if this is the right tool for the job,
Cheers Stevie B
Good to know, thanks for that.
I completely agree with Paul. I watched a video with instructions on attaching the string to an eye bolt with tension alone, but I found it very difficult. So now I drill 1/16" hole in the shank near the eye and burnish it a little to soften the edges. This has worked well for me.
Another trick I discovered was to use a round capped nut at the eye end - (like the one in the upper right of the pic below). I found that some of my builds ended up with the string snapping over the hex corners, which scared me. These round ones eliminate that problem.
I've seen people tie the string on and then turn the bolt. I'm going to drill a hole through the bolt like a tuner and let the strings wrap around in the threads. At least that's the plan anyway.
Nice work, MFJ! I'm kind of surprised that the screw-in eyes hold with the string tension. But I guess it also has to do with the length of the screw & the material underneath? Hmm...lots to think about, Either way, nice!
Paul: I've seen the eye bolts as tuners before, but I still don't completely understand them. I can't seem to grasp how the strings attach to them without coming undone. One day I'll give them a shot, though. Probably the same time I try them as anchors. Of course, knowing my luck, the whole thing will probably implode. Ha!
Thanks for the comments, y'all! Lots to mull over...
I'm using eye bolts/anchor bolts as tuners on my Short Scale Resonator Bass build.
Thanks, Paul & Wayfinder! I appreciate it! I'm hoping it works out. It's the closest thing I've ever had to an original idea...& I'm not even entirely sure it's all that original! Ha!
String break angle at the bridge should be at least 7 degrees according to most of the recommendations. Too loose of a angle gives you buzzing - too sharp can be hard to bend strings and break strings easily.
