In the key of L.
Wake up Bear! There's important stuff to be doing. Ain't no time for sleeping. :)>
It's a B sharp
A scale is very much a part of basic theory, but that book probably shows you where to find it on the neck, and what I propose is the level of understanding to where you can find it yourself.......
Someone should do a Music Theory Thread. Hint Hint Hint LOL
Thanks Mark.
That's it Paul. Very generalized and condensed, but that's basically it. Clarification, we are possibly confusing tunings and chord possibilities. For example, a 135 would be a Major tuning, but you could of course form a chord that flatted the third and made a minor triad.
Etc. etc.
Bear, I'd suggest that basic theory s all encompassing. Its no different for an open tuning than it is for a saxophone.
The comment wall is (again) a poor platform to get into it in depth, but I promise its worth the effort.
Tip: the eye opener for me was when an instructor from Berkley school of music sat down at a piano and in five minutes clearly explained what I had struggled with for several years. The combination of the visual aid of the piano and his clear, simple explanation combined with my basic understanding of translating piano keys to fretted notes just made it click and most importantly, stick.
I had to teach myself from books back when I was young and I've forgotten a lot of it over the last 25 years. I need to go back over it all.
So 3 string gits limit you to power chords 1-5-1 or major chords 1-3-5
4 string gits give you power chords, major and minor chords, 4ths and 7th chords
Need 5 strings for 9ths.
Right?
I'm hoping to have the money to buy at least one of the new cigar box guitar tuition books on Amazon in the next few weeks. I wonder if anyone has written info or books specifically on music theory for open tunings or, maybe better still, cigar box guitars? I have a book that I found for £1 in a charity shop that deals with music theory in general. No good to me if I don't bother to read it lol. I always imagine reading musoc theory to be like watching paint dry but that could be my own silly preconceived notion. I'll give it a go I reckon.
No problem Paul. Just something I found on Google and more importantly something that I think improves the sound of the new guitar whilst solving the high pitched issue. Amazing what can be discovered online lol. Good luck with playing it on your guitar too.
Thanks to you also Mark. I don't understand all the interval stuff and tuning names or why it's called what it is. It's not a problem but I'm sure knowing can and will help. Thanks again :)
The third wasn't dropped to a second, its a flatted third.
And yes it can be confusing, since a flatted third in this case is the same note as a sharp second.
What we need to know:
A seventh requires four notes, while a ninth requires 5 notes, a funny hat, hand rolled cigarette and possibly a funny accent....... LOL!
My suggestion, learn enough basic music theory to know what a major scale and chord is, what to change to make them minors, and perhaps if you like, what a 7th is and how it is typically used to add tension just before resolution......
I had a hard time with it for years before discovering someone who could simply explain it in a way that made sense, and as a reward- I better understand what I am listening to, trying to learn and trying to play. And the basics are pretty easy once I got over the apprehension developed by idiot music teachers who made it hard.
