lol.. well . have fun .. lotsa good info from Mark , Don , etc.
so you should be covered what ever way you decide to go . i just gave you the way that cuts out all the concerns . ;-)
Danni Bear-
As a "safer" alternative , you can get away with a 2 to 4 stringer short scale bass / hybrid , using the fat strings from a special drop d guitar string pack . they will still fit the regular tuners , and a good piece of oak will be sufficient for a regular 25.5 scale through neck (which is still within a bass conversion scale too). (actually some folks convert their regular teles to a shortscale bass ). you can add your 1 bass to a regular 3 stringer and still use the same pickup and not worry too much about murdering your "guitar" amp speaker too .
(i've done a couple that way ) 2 and 3 stringers basses .

( string pack brand)

(i'd use the .52)
as you can see . it sounds like a bass.
hope that helps .
"Any recommendations on a cheap but decent sounding, battery operated bass amp?"
Just have to keep it complicated.... LOL!
I am not up to date on what's on the market in this realm Bear, but here's some thoughts anyway.
Ideally, bass needs some amp overhead to really work well. IE: You really do need more wattage than a regular guitar amp to get good results. I used to have a Roland bass cube, and 30 watts really didn't quite cut it when playing with others. So I am skeptical about getting good results out of the "typical" battery operated practice amp style rig. And "cheap" is up for interpretation. I don't think there's a great cheap solution personally, but there may be ways to do this well without getting too carried away.
But..... I recently witnessed a street performance utilizing an amp for guitar that made me take notice. The artist had two moderate sized auto batteries in a "milk crate" wired to a medium sized DC/AC inverter that he had tie wrapped to the side of the crate. It wouldn't be light, but then neither is a proper amp..... Dani needs something to carry anyway right? LOL!
I wasn't sure how this would work, but I peaked and after playing at least 1 1/2 hours, the inverter was still displaying over 12v input. It works!
I'd have to agree with Don here, it would be best IMO to have two outputs.
Two different tones, two different needs. Best results would probably come from a dedicated amp set up to be honest. Guitar amps aren't great for bass. Best choices would vary depending on the sound you are going after. I might want some reverb on a guitar but not the bass for example.
Hey Bear, have you considered having no knobs, just 2 outputs? The guy from Moreland and Arbuckle has his hybrid CBG with a single bass string and 3 guitar strings wired like this. He either runs to 2 separate amps or a single 2 channel amp. This way he has separate volume and tone controls for the bass string and the guitar strings. It works well for him, check them out on youtube.
